I loved bones and dirt. For my biology term paper I did a prehistory of Colorado and got a rock sample from every damn formation along the front range, even scrambling down onto private property at the foot of the hogback to get a piece of limestone from a shell-packed formation whose name I can't recall. Still boggles the mind that the Dakota formation making up the spine of the hogback is named Dakota because it plunges thousands of feet into the earth only to reemerge in the Dakotas. Some guy had written a really enthralling (to me) masters thesis at the School of Mines that I bought, and detailed very nicely where all the outcroppings were from the Fountain formation (Red Rocks) to the very newest aggregates. I really am sorry I lost that little book over the years. I have been tempted to go back to the Mines bookstore and see if it is still available. I was lucky the bio teacher accepted my project because it really had nothing to do with biology. But my strong suit was math, I ended up majoring in that because I validated the first year and I was just lazy enough to do three years of college in a four year period. Then I went to Rickover University, and finally went to Texas for physics. Last edited on Friday July 29th, 2011 03:20 pm by JiminyDeCricket ____________________ Let your conscience be your guide. |

Ah, the Big Island. On of the few places on earth where you can snow ski and water ski on the same day. From the age of ten, I was gonna be an astronomer. When I got to college, I took the only astronomy course offered at BGSU and after two years, I planned to go to the University of Michigan. Only I soon realized that there was too much math involved in atronomy and that was not my strong subject. The astronomy course was offered in the Geology Department--and the rest is histroy.

You should grab your bathing suit and take him to the observatory on Mauna Kea at 14,000 feet. Hard to believe Hawaii has mountains as high as those in Colorado and just a few miles from white sandy beaches. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Ah, well my dad taught us diversity and to be charitable. Not sure how well he did but he tried. We all turned out ok, well I wonder about Thad sometimes. He also loves dinosaurs and Kevin took him to the museum and the uni all the time for bugs and dinos. We took him to Drumheller to see all the fossils, which he loved. Somewhere along the line the space thing clicked and has stuck. Patrick has loved space/stars etc since he was a little guy. His ceiling had glow in the dark stars and galaxies on it. Got older, he had one of those lite things that put the solar system on the ceiling, then he went to the planetarium and all was lost. He also has a pretty sweet telescope now thanks to UncleThad. I meant to planetarium but said observatory, which is understandable as Uncle Thad has asked to take my child to Arizona to the observatory. sigh

We almost had a little one. Some donor offered a pretty substantial telescope to out little college which I was very anxious to get, but the college told me I could not accept it because we didn't do astronomy. Instead, my kids were taught the glorious example of "diversity" that we should learn from the people of Bosnia. By people rendered homeless because of the ethic warfare going on at the time.

Keele wrote:LOL! Yes, we get Nat Geo. But for the last three weeks we have had Tour de France on 24-7. The kids were so grateful when it ended. They can get back to Sponge Bob, the Simpsons, and Cake Boss. In the fall they are going to celebrate their great grandfather's 80th along with his twin brother back in New Jersey. They plan to visit the Cake Boss bakery. How did you get your kid to like space craft instead of frosting? I have failed.

LOL! Do you get the National Geographic channel? It is pretty good. I am currently hooked on House Hunters International and Property Virgins. Sandra Rinomato is my hero! I love how she slaps foolish home buyers back into reality! Soon it will be hockey season, so our tv will be used for sport. Well Patrick never misses Dirty Jobs or most anything on Nat Geo.

Our thirty something daughter moved back in with us with her two daughters so my DVR is crammed full of crap like that. I'd rather watch infomercials about cleansing diets and how much you will poop. But there is hope. I don't know if Pastor Jo said a prayer for me, but said daughter just got her first full time job. She has always followed her bliss, working a few hours a week coaching cheerleading and a few more hours a week at a wine-making store. Of course she didn't apply for it or interview for it, it just fell in her lap, which is the only way it could possibly happen. Now if she could get sick of living in the basement...

Never watched an episode of RH, or Survivor or any of those other "reality" tv shows. We watched several of episodes of Cake Boss the first season, not too bad, the second season was pure nausea. Same with Duff and his crazy cakes, 2nd season total nausea. My SIL forced me to watch 2 episodes of Bridezilla, which convinced me that shooting people for being arsehats is ok. I was sick a few months back and spent a few hours watching "Say Yes to the dress" there is no way anyone with a functioning brain cell should pay over 1K for a wedding dress. And there were little snots on there throwing fits because they wanted the 20K dress and their budget from mom and dad was only for 12K. HOLY CRAP!

My daughter watches "Real Housewives from..." 17 different cities and it makes reality TV like "Survivor" seem like a high art form. It's like Springer with no adult supervision. About the only reality TV I can even stand to be in the room with is "Cake Boss" just because it is so stupid, I know its going to be stupid, and the guy is pure niceness. So twice in one day Gordie and I have sent the devil scurrying for his long johns.

My original post credited him for being a fantastic singer, but then I decided to check and I too was disappointed. The music is a great part of the show, and you are right, the writing is great. I'm kind of surprised to see Jason Lee with some swagger compared to his Earl character. In the episode where he finds the girl who faked her death to escape her abusive husband, and at the end visits the husband who also thought she was dead. Great scene. Don't mess with Dwight.

It's our favorite show, too. Love all the characters and the writing is above normal for TV show. But you just burst my bubble that the singing is lip synced. He does a very good job of it--I hadn't ever noticed it and I'm pretty good at spotting lip syncing.

After the first season, I just saw Memphis Beat is back. Both funny and serious, the star is the multi-talented Jason Lee who started as a pro skate boarder, then starred in the series My Name is Earl. The last episode I saw the MPD were all getting smart phones that nobody liked. At one point Jason Lee's character (Dwight Hendricks) and partner decide to break into a restaurant and his buddy gets ready to elbow the window and Dwight says, "Wait, I have an app for that," and breaks the window with his smart phone. Each episode ends with Lee singing(its dubbed I just found out) in blues club, and it is great. If you haven't seen it, check it out. http://www.tnt.tv/series/memphisbeat/?SR=sr3_627740_go Last edited on Tuesday July 26th, 2011 03:48 am by JiminyDeCricket ____________________ Let your conscience be your guide. |
